The above engraving, by Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528), the greatest German artist of the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance, depicts the ideal Christian Knight, a chivalric ideal that had become a cult at the court of Maximilian, the Holy Roman Emperor. Here, the Knight rides courageously and steadfastly past the figures of Death (with the hourglass) and the Devil (with the horn).
