The German artist Hans Grien painted the above
portrait of Count Loewenstein, who typlified the life and
career of a member of the upper nobility in the late 15th and
early 16th century. The illegitimate son of a German prince,
Loewenstein inherited large estates in southwest Germany, and
served as diplomat and military advisor to Maximilian, the
Holy Roman Emperor. Lowenstein was murdered in 1524.
The ermine collar and luxurious clothing
reveal Lowenstein’s wealth and status. The tight gripped hand
on his collar and the facial expressions suggest the character
traits necessary for a successful career at the ruler’s court.
