1986年8月20日に米国オクラホマ州エドモンド市の郵便配達員 Patrick Henry Sherrill が上司から「もっとよく働かなければ解雇する」と脅されたことにムカッと来て、同僚14人を殺害した事件から。

Usage （用例・用法）

After he lost his job, he went postal. He returned to the office with a gun and shot the manager.
失業してあいつおかしくなっちゃった。銃を持って事務所に戻り、上司を撃ったんだ。

元々の　postal　は、「郵便（局）の」、「郵送の」という意味を持つ形容詞です。次のように使われます。

The postal worker lost his temper when the stamp machine broke.
スタンプ機が壊れて、郵便局員はかんしゃくを起こした。

John lost the postal address of his ex-girlfriend.
ジョンは昔の恋人の郵便の宛先（あてさき）を忘れた。

上の用例は、addressだけを使ってもよいのですが、addressには、上の意味の他に「演説」「式辞」という意味があります。 この場合には次のように使われます。

In the press, machine translation went from the Next Big Thing to the butt of popular jokes. The most infamous machine translation pratfall, cited to this day in many articles on the subject, involves a computer that supposedly translated the sentence “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” into Russian as “The vodka is good, but the steak is lousy.” W. John Hutchins, whose book Machine Translation: Past, Present, Future is the machine translation bible, traces the quip to a 1962 Harper’s story. Even by the time the jibe ran in Harper’s, he says, it was a familiar put-down not just of machine translation, but of all translation, including human translation.
