What if you image-search Google.com for slang?
June 13, 2003

Image search results of Google for alang (slang02.jpg--530x357)

What a surprise! You see a lot of snakes, eh? One snake coils up here while another crawls away in the grass there. One snake seems to hiss and ready to jump at you. But it is strange because you cannot find any such entry in the menu page.

So, I have clicked some of the pictures above. However, I have’t come up with any description. Most of the sites simply display pictures of various snakes, which puzzles me. Then I took a close look at each URL and realized that most of the URL end with .nl, which means the Netherlands.

Unfortunately, I have never learned Danish. So I jumped to one of the transplation sites. However, not many sites offer Danish-English translation.

After half an hour or so, I came up with this site: InterTran

The result is as follows:

InterTran tranlslation result of slang from Danish to English (slang03.gif--504x322)

Voila! A slang means a snake in Danish. Of course, I suspected so when I had seen a dozen or so snakes in the above page. However, I had never expected to come up with so many snakes when I image-searched Google.com for slang.

After all, slang has suddenly jumped to the front row of the world-lingo theater because of globalization of the Internet.

World Cup Trivia

The biggest upset in a final occurred at the 1998 World Cup, when Host France thrashed favorites
Brazil 3 - 0.

Soccer player and fallen goalkeeper (socer22.jpg--137x103) Possibly the most infamous goal in the World Cup was scored in 1986, when archrivals Argentina and England met. Argentina’s Diego Maradona leapt high for a ball and used his hand to tap it past the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal became known as the “The Hand of God”.

The 1950 World Cup was the only competition without a real final. Host Brazil needed only a draw against Uruguay to win. A world record 200,000 fans watched as Uruguay came from behind to win 2 -1.

Three soccer players (socer12.jpg--138x106) For a few, winning in the World Cup is not everything. In 1990 United Arab Emirates players were promised a Rolls-Royce for every goal the team scored. UAE lost all three games, but scored twice.
