何がおかしいかというと “lace” を　“race”　と訳しているわけです。これではミイラになった女性もビックリです。

同じ文章を AltaVista で訳してみました。次に示すのがその結果です。

今回の翻訳例ではAltaVistaは見事です。「ちって」以外はすべて訳しています。「掘り起こ」、「ボロボロ」、「ダマスク」それに「敷石」も英訳しています。 しかも、ずるいことに、「レース」はどちらかふさわしい単語を選ばずに、２つの英単語を並べて表示しています。

しかし、よく見るとおかしな箇所もあります。「ボロ」を　“rag”　と訳しているのは良いのですが、「ボロボロ」が２つ重なっているので “rag rag” としているところなどは、いかにもコンピューターが訳しているということを物語っているようです。要するに、臨機応変な対応ができません。 決まりきったことを決まりきったように訳しています。人間が目にすれば、すぐにこの重複に気づきます。

ところで「ダマスク(damask)」ですが、 英辞郎　on the Web　で引くと次のように出ています。

Niftyでは、上のように訳していますが、これは当然のことながらAltaVistaの訳のほうがまともです。 つまり、“under broad daylight”　と訳されるべきです。
